Journey through the Vineyard.....

North Eastern Italy

The North Eastern quarter of this part of Italy is traditionally known as the “Tre Venezie” (The Three Venetias), and encompasses the regions of Trentino-Alto Adige, Veneto and Friuli-Venezia.

The Fantinel Family owned vineyard in Spilimbergo was founded in 1969 by Mario Fantinel, an admired hotelier and restaurateur in the area. Now run by his sons Luciano, Gianfranco and Loris. Today at their side are their children, Lara, Manuela, Stephano and Marco, bearing proof that the attachment and respect for the long vine rows run deep in the Fantinel family. The Family estate covers 250 hectares of the region.

Our tour took us around the family vineyards, followed by a few glasses of perfectly chilled Fantinel Prosecco, and an excellent lunch followed by a superb glass of sticky Picolit. After a little siesta back at the vineyards excellent accommodation, a visit to the village of Spilimbergo, a couple of bottles of Santa Caterina Tocai Friulano sent us into a deep and relaxing nights sleep. The morning brought a busy day with visits to Udine, the City of Arches. Lunch in one of Mario’s Restaurants, “Pane e Vino”, The La Roncaia vineyard, and dinner at the winery were all crammed in. We tried, Il Fusco, a superb red that expresses the finest characteristics of its territory, and the locally grown grape. Also tasted were, Eclisse, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and all finished off with a gorgeous Ramandolo.

The Fantinel Family Wines at Guy’s

Borgo Tesis Pinot Grigio is a fine elegant wine appreciated for its balanced tones that mature in the year following the harvest. This copper tinged straw yellow fruity wine is recommended with; antipasto, lights soups, egg and fish dishes. It is also excellent as an aperitif.

Paron Mario Barone Rosso Boldness and balance give life to this blend of Refosco, Cabernet Franc and Pinot Nero. With a ruby red violet colour and its intense, fruity bouquet full well balanced flavour has been skilfully made. Recommended with antipasto, savoury dishes and cheeses.

Don Giovanni Grappa Pinot Grigio Chardonnay has a quality great enough to fill the largest Venetian glassware containers. As in the olden days this Grappa is distilled with care. Slowly, without any concern other than quality. Fantastic as a relaxing digestive.

Next Season we visit France and the Loire region. Santé......
